Jemm's
Story ...
Jemm
is the result of a long term breeding program
from a process carefully
planned to result in a foal that would
be
-good looking
- well built & above all else ....
super, super easy to work with.
You
can read what and why Jemm's breeding is
special by Clicking HERE.
Jemm's
name was chosen with a lot of care and a lot
of input from many
of Manitoba's Horse lovers .
Most of these people are not into high end
showing but
they are the backbone of the Manitoba Horse
Industry.
For most they only have one horse and that
horse is their friend. In some cases
the horse they have maybe isn't the best horse
but they have stuck it out and worked through
lots of issues.
In some cases they don't even have a horse
yet, but would really like one.
Many people get into horses for the love of
them and mistakenly think "a horse is a
horse" when they get started. Quite
by accident I learned that this is not the
case and genetics play a huge part in how good
a horse will be (sure there are always the
flukes that with no rhyme or reason and above
the odds turn out to be good horses - but that
is not the norm.)
I learned this first with my Labrador
Retrievers and then with my
horses.
IT PAYS TO PAY A LITTLE MORE AND KNOW
EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE GETTING. BOTH WITH
DOGS AND WITH HORSES YOU ARE LOOKING AT
INVESTING A LOT OF TIME AND THIS ANIMAL WILL
BECOME A PART OF YOUR LIFE -
TAKING TIME TO EDUCATE YOURSELF AND INVEST IN
ONE WITH GOOD GENETIC POTENTIAL ONLY MAKES
SENSE.
My goal in breeding has been to produce horses
for these kind of people. Horses that
are easy to work with, laid back and look good
- all with the potential to go as far as their
owners want to take them.
We are not a high end breeding operation - we
have a few well chosen mares and we
somehow managed to own an amazing stallion who
consistently stamps his foals
with what we see as the most important thing
in a horse...
temperament - willingness to learn - a laid
back take on life
and then as a bonus he also contributes an
excellent build
and color.
Jemm's
Name: Jemm's Name was chosen with lots
of input through a contest.
The submissions were so overwhelming that we
closed the contest early and tried to sort
through the names. We narrowed it down
to 10 names and then held a poll to attempt to
narrow it down further. Each of the three of
us here at Red Dog had a favorite name but one
name came up that was so obvious that if I had
thought of it first I never would have had a
contest. We always try to name our
animals with some reminder of their mother -
this helps us keep track of who belongs to
who. (and results in a cow named Dolly who has
calves named Polly, Jolly, Olly, & Molly.) However
there was one other name that we had all three
managed to agree on before the final night of
the contest. We had decided to name the
filly Xanthe - so we combined the two and
named her Xanthe Jemm.
Our thanks to the many people who contributed.
HERE ARE THE RESULTS: Our
Top Four Name Choices Were:
XAYNE
JEMM
ZARA
XANTHE
As noted in our advertising the winner of the
poll was not necessarily the winner of the
prize - in the end we decided Xayne would be
great name for a gelding but didn't quite suit
a filly. We really liked the name
and we really liked Zara but in the end we
chose Jemm.
Xanthe was one we couldn't let go though - so
she is Xanthe Jemm.
Congratulations
to:
Rosann Wollmann for
Jemm (submitted as Jemma) Ashley
Irwin for
Xanthe Honourable
Mentions to:
Tamara Hurst for
Peep - made us laugh and we used this to name
a Kitten
Brandy Chevalier for
Dulym - we thought this was really original
and plan to use it for a colt in the future.
Zach & Jen - we thought this was an
amazing coincidence as she sent us a long list
of names and one right after the other were
listed Zach and Jen - Our son and
daughter-in-law's names. Janelle
Dyck of Austin for
Zara & Zoey - we all really liked these
names Fiona
Stewart for
Zoomn (She contributed it as Zoomin) - we
liked this name alot Tiffany
Densley of Estevan, Saskatchewan for
Xayne (submitted as Xaine) - we loved this
name but decided it should be for a colt.
Having
said all that... Jemm was imprinted when she
was approx 8 hours old. She has been properly handled daily including being taught
to lead, to stand tied she will be taught to load in a trailer,
to have things on her back, to give to
pressure, etc. She will be
approx. 16:1 HH when she is full grown.
She is a buckskin and though she had a 50% chance of going
grey it looks like she will stay buckskin - she will make an excellent trail horse,
4H project horse for an older member, and she
should do well in the show ring - we do not
have any foals from this mare old enough to
know whether she will have the potential for
jumping.
She is offered for sale at this time for
$1500 until she is broke to ride as a two year
old.
Anybody with a showing background that intends
to show her will get an automatic $350
Certificate for use in our tackshop with her
purchase.
(Proof must be presented in the form of any
ribbon won in any previous show)
If you have not shown but intend to use her
for showing we will give you a $350
certificate for our tackshop upon presentation
of the first ribbon you win with her.
Even Halter ribbons qualify.
(Sorry, Participaction Ribbons do not
qualify)
Jemm
promises to be an outstanding filly - she will
turn heads where ever she goes.
