Zeke,
The making of a Kid's Horse The
story starts with who Zeke is.
Zeke is a 2004 AQHA/Welsh cross gelding.
His AQHA bloodlines include Zip's
Dynasty n/n (going back to Impressive), Two
Eyed Jack in his fourth generation, Little Doc
Horn (Sired by Leo), Joe Reed II and Plaudit He
was foaled at Red Dog Ranch in 2004 and given
the same basic training as all Red Dog
foals. He was halter broke as a
weanling.
As a yearling he was taught to longe, stand
tied, load in a trailer, saddled, bridled and
long lined. He was sold as a yearling in
Fall of 2005. He was sold again in
spring 2006.
In July of 2006, recognizing serious
potential for a very special horse, Red Dog
purchased him back
and we have begun intensive training for him. Zeke
is available for sale at any stage of his
training, priced according to the stage he is
currently at.
When his training is complete, he will be a
completely trustworthy, "bomb proof"
kid's horse with the looks and brains to do
anything any kid wants to do with him -
whether that be 4H, showing, jumping, rodeoing,
barrels, pole bending, trail riding,
etc. We estimate that to be when he is
about 5 years old. At that point his
price will be $5,000. Zeke
is a sorrel gelding, with a few white
markings. He looks like a miniature
Quarter Horse. He will be approximately
13:2HH when he is full grown. We
hope you enjoy the following picture story of
Zeke's training. UNFORTUNATELY,
a computer crash means we lost all the
pictures we had of Zeke as a weanling and
yearling, so his picture story starts when we
purchased him back in July 06

When we got Zeke home we realized that he had
picked up a few bad habits and was very rusty
with the basics we had taught him.
His habits included getting to close and
wanting to rub his head on you, as well as
mouth you. He did not respond well to
back pressure on the lead rope, etc. It
was apparent that Zeke needed to be retold who
was the boss. We re-established this by
re-teaching him to longe properly. At
first, Zeke lunged mediocre one way and
refused the other way. On his
"good" way, when asked to canter he
fired out at you with his back feet. Of
course that had to stop, and right
now. His basic leading and ground
manners were so, so, unless he didn't want to
do what you asked him - ie. he didn't want to
back up, or he didn't want to come the
direction you were asking him.
Unlike with a completely green horse who must
first be taught "how" to go
where you ask, we knew Zeke's problem was not
that he didn't know how to lead but rather
chose not to lead - so we fixed him up in very
short order with a revolutionary training tool
"The Noavel",
which quickly "tuned" him up and
helped him to realize he was now in a
different ball game.
Quickly
Zeke found that it was in his best interest to
longe nicely in both directions at the walk,
trot and canter and to put on the brakes when
he heard the word whoa. That
accomplished, it was time to continue his
education.

The
next stage in Zeke's training was ponying.
He is ponied behind an older mare and
led through, around, over, under and beside
anything and everything around our place that
will help get him used to strange sights and
sounds. His job is to go willingly and
without hesitation, anywhere the mare
goes. This is integrated as part of his
ongoing training.

Longing
and moving ahead over obstacles.
